As a race the dwarfs are not know for their piety, instead they choose to put their trust in more malleable objects like crafted items or the raw ore and gems that come from the ground. However, there are some that have heard a higher calling and choose to put their faith into the divine beings of their world. A common god among dwarf is Torag. His infinity with the earth and devices tend to draw the earth dwelling, craftsmen dwarfs into his belief. Durgean Oginson is one such dwarf, who has found a higher calling as a cleric of Torag.
His life was almost always destined towards service of the gods. His father, Ogin was a priest of Torag himself. Many dwarfs came to the sermons Ogin gave, or to receive blessings of the god for when working deep in the mines. Under Ogin's guidance, the priesthood flourished and became on the larger religions for a period. Yet still, despite having so many believers, they dwarfs never built Torag a cathedral or spire or monument. Instead, they chose to honour and his worship him in his own domain, under the earth. There his blessing and faith was strong, it could be felt all around them. A sacred cave near the rad that leads to the eastern gate of Janderhoff became his holy place of worship, and where this clerics live.
The wilderness around Janderhoff is not a friendly place to live, it is crawling with goblins and orcs, who bare an ancient enmity with the dwarfs. It is this hatred of one another that draws them out from time and time again. Groups of goblins and armed orcs began raiding and pillaging dwarven homesteads or caravans along the road to the city. But every now and then there is a brave greenskin leader. They rather an army or a large raiding party and they actually dare to move close to the heavily guarded walls of Janderhoff. It was during one of this raids that tragedy struck Durgean and his family. The sacred caves of Torag are isolated, away from the main city and an ambitious orc boss had heard that they contained riches. Enough riches that he could hire an army and march upon the surrounding settlements. The attack started with stealth, small goblins sneaking up the steep rocky range of the Mindspin Mountains to surprise and attack unwary dwarfs leaving their mass late in the evening. The alarm was quickly raised, but it was too late and the bulk of the attackers was too close for reinforcements or supporting attacks from the city itself. Dozens upon dozens of orc warriors charged out of the fading sunlight and into a desperate battle with the remaining congregation and priests, who all fought like heroes of a long forgotten age trying to stop any greenskin stepping into the sacred caves.
It was then that Ogin stepped out into the fray. Still wearing the ceremonial blacksmiths apron of his god, he hefted his blessed warhammer and charged into combat. His presence and skill helped turn the tide, as if their god was with them fighting off the invaders trying to violate his scared domain. Ogin slew orc left right and centre. Then he found himself in a lull, a forced circle. Waiting inside was the orc responsible for the attacks. Both calling out their war cries, they clashed together like titans of old. Ancient grudges and hatred swept over them and they were lost in a blizzard of strikes, parries and ripostes. But ultimately the lack of protective armour was too much for the cleric, and the brutal cleaver of the orc boss tore open his stomach, spilling his guts to the floor in a shower of red. Pausing only to steal the sacred hammer used by Ogin, the boss and the few remaining orcs fled into the darkness. Leaving the dwarfs to deal with their wounded and dying.
Enraged at his father's death, Durgean pledged to Torag vengeance for this defilement and swore never to return or to set foot in his sacred caverns until the orc responsible for his father's death was dead, and the sacred hammer was returned to the priesthood. Following the orcs trail and gossip has led Durgean all over Varsia, and currently has led him to Sandpoint where he has heard of a nearby cave that sounds like it might have housed this orc for a while. Or at least has greenskins in there.
