Shalelu's head snapped around upon hearing the spoken Elven language. Her eyes widened. She had suspected that he'd was Drow but this just confirmed it. Her ice blues eyes danced with a certain fire that was sparked by hatred. A hatred that only the two races could feel for one another. While it was true that she hated Goblins far more than most, in this case, it was a hatred steeped in a history far older than her own experiences.
For a moment, both Shalelu and the Drow just looked at each other, until she broke the silence. "Why are you here, Drow?"

Godein nodded, rising from his chair and shaking Zhen's hand once more. "A pleasure, Zhen. Should you require assistance with any jobs that come to hand, I'll be around until the following morning."
Alone at his table again, he resumed watching the room. The chaotic influences lingered, but he couldn't be sure which members were responsible for it. The night was only starting to get late, Godein deciding that he would observe the room for a while more. He rose and stepped to the bar.
"Pardon barkeep, another ale please."

As various people started moving about and some headed upstairs, Kemuel found himself eager to find out what work was on offer. He rose from the bar, gently so as not to upset anyone. How many bar room brawls had he been witness to that had started with someone stepping one someone else's foot, or some other trivial thing. He shook his head a touch and breathed a small laugh at the thought.
Stepping lightly across the tavern floor, the exiled Knight stopped in front of the board and leant in towards it, occasionally sipping at his ale as he read.

His whole body tensed when their eyes locked. For a moment, he considered running. Another, he considered striking. Finally, when she broke the silence with a question, he decided both would be foolhardy and instead chose to try to diffuse the situation. Irrational anger and hatred boiled beneath his skin, yet the ever-present conscience soothed him, told him that what he was feeling was not who he was, but who he was made to be. I have the control.
"The same as anyone in an inn, elf. Shelter from the elements, a hot meal, and news of the region. Anything more is not of your concern," he said through gritted teeth. Who was she to question him? Alas, he understood, despite the arrogance threatening to overwhelm him. Few trusted his race, and for good reason. Drow were not renowned for their kindness, nor their respect of others. Elves in particular had good reason to hate him on sight, owing to the endless years of strife between the kin. Why couldn't it have been Orcana?
Shadow felt foolish for even entering the hallway without his cloak. An amateur's mistake.

Ameiko smiled at Godein. "Certainly, sir." she replied as she poured a fresh ale for the man. "Enjoying the evening? I guess your just happy to be out of this horrid weather, huh?"
Shalelu frowned at the Drow's answer, and she took a single step forward. A single, strong hang on the hilt of her finely crafted short sword. She began to speak in a low, but fierce tone. "This town is a peaceful place for the most part and welcomes all. In this weather, I am sure you will have missed the signpost..." her ice blue eyes remained locked with his. "but this is the only warning I shall grace you with, Drow. If you do anything that endangers this town, or hurts its citizens, I will make you my concern."
---- Godein: -1 gp from your total.

Shadow's eyes flashed dangerously when the elf stepped forward. His fists clenched. "Your prejudices misguide you, elf. You do your people little justice with these threats." It was spoken with barely concealed contempt. Though he had no desire for bloodshed, her assuming nature put him on guard. Stupid, Shadow... very stupid. Why couldn't it have just been Orcana? Almost without moving, his body shifted to a ready stance in case the elf thought it best to engage him. He swore long ago not to make the first strike unless absolutely necessary.
She was certainly pushing that line.

In a somewhat un-elf like way, Shalelu almost snarled at the Drow's mention of the word Justice. After all, what Drow could ever hope to know about Justice? Her heart raced. She was normally a calm and quiet person, but this deep seated hatred she felt... she could not understand it.
For a few, very uneasy moments, the two glared into each others eyes.
Shalelu straightened herself, turned, and moved toward the door of her room. She doubted highly that Ameiko would not appreciate violence in the Dragon, seeing that it had a reputation for cracking down on bar brawls hard. Besides, the weather showed no signs of letting up, and she needed to return to her patrols. It was not unheard of for one or two of the larger Goblin tribes in the Sandpoint Hinterlands to use nights such as these for cover in order to raid the town.
She opened the door to the large room, and turned her head to look back at the Drow. Her eyes narrowed for a moment. 'I mean it, you cave dwelling son-of-a-whore' she thought to herself.
With that she entered her room and closed the door hard.

Kale paused for a few seconds then turning to face the job sheet on the wall, Kale grabbed it and ripped it off the wall. After having the parchment in his hands Kale sat next to Diabel. The thought of someone else wanting to see the jobs did not bother Kale. The sheet was easier to read sitting down. But he did not notice the soldier standing at the fire place.
"Hmmm, let me have a look. Goblin job. Every set of goblin ears u bring back, you make 10 gold. See Sheriff Hemlock". Kale said aloud.
"10 gold for every pair. Easy money.......surely," Kale thought. Kale looked at the half-elf.
"Well......Sound easy enough ?." Kale was in a way....hoping Diabel was not interested. "More goblins to kill the more gold for me." Kale thought.
Kale handed the parchment to the half-elf and at the same time, he noticed the group of three talking to, what seemed to be the woman who hid in the corner most of the night. Kale seen the woman looking rather out of place. Nervous she looked, and slightly shaking and on edge. He also noticed her companion was no longer by her side. She was in conversation with one of them, but Kale could not hear what they were saying to each other. But Kale knew something was off, but he could not figure out what.

With a grimace, Kemuel watched on as the huge mountain of humanity ripped the job postings down and walked away, back to the table with the Elf he had been sitting with. Perhaps he hadn't meant to be quite so rude. Perhaps he had. Who knew. Back in The Ton, manners and etiquette were drilled into the Knights as much as fighting technique and tactics. Then again he thought, as the Knight tilted his head and watched the oak of a man, he was a long, long way from the days of the Knights of the Ton.
Striding over to the table, Kemuel decided to approach with grace rather than might. Leaning down onto the table he locked eyes with the big stranger. "Before you ripped it down, I was looking at that posting, Sir. Perhaps another Ale would sharpen your eye?", he teased. "Nevertheless, my name is Kemuel." The Knight extended a hand to shake, as was his custom. "It seems we are all rather interested in what work there is to be found?"

Having paid for his room, Zhen couldn't help but overhear the farmers words to the female half-elf. Not quite sure whether they were going to cause her problems or not, but she seemed nervous almost vulnerable. She most likely can handle herself he thought, travelling the lands meant you kind of had to be able to, or you'd be dead.
Swivelling round on his barstool, he was just in time to see the giant barbarian rip down the job list and take it back to his seat near the fire and his new companion. *sigh* "Well there goes the next part of my plan." Nothing for it but to ask now, hopefully there will something rewarding and challenging on there, possibly teaming up with that Godein. He seems a handy fellow to have around, maybe a little distracted but seems good enough. "Excuse me Miss. Kaijitsu, would there happen to be another list of the local jobs anywhere? Just that I wanted to have a quick look through before retiring for the night but the Man Mountain over there appears to have removed it? Also, may I have another cup of water."
Whilst talking, Zhen stole a few glances at the half elf something-fay or ray he seemed to of heard. Undeniably pretty, but seemingly uncomfortable in the most basic of situations, would she be able to see where the farmers conversation might be leading? A fine looking fellow he was, but like most humans they lack self discipline, especially when involving alcohol, in this land it seems they are unwilling to dedicate themselves to working hard, manners to those above you and learning their place to improve their chances of better station in the next life.
"Oh well" Zhen thought "I'm not here to instruct the heathens, but to increase my understanding."

While reading the other jobs that were on offer and before Diabel could reply, his focus was disturbed by a pleasant voice. Lifting his head he was looking at the Veteran soldier. He was leaning on the table complaining about the parchment Kale held in his hand. "Perhaps another ale would sharpen that eye." "Was this an insult or someone trying to be funny", Thought the slightly annoyed Kale.
Kale slowly placed the jobs sheet on the table while at the same time not loosing eye contact with the knight. Kale stood up off his stool. the warm orange light from the fire which was on Kemuel was now blocked by the young mountains frame. Kale studied the knight for a few seconds. A highly trained warrior, Kale noticed the greatsword. "A skilled knight too." A greatsword was not the easiest weapon to wield.
Before Kale reacted to anything he noticed the paladin offer his hand in good gesture and introduced himself as Kemuel. Kale watched his hand for a few seconds. Turning to the table the Barbarian lifted his empty ale jug with his left hand. Kale met the paladins hand his right hand. shaking hands Kale also put the jug into Kemuel's left hand. As Kemuel wondered why, Kale spoke.
" Well then you better get me another Ale, to help me sharpen my eye."

While taking the parchment from Kale another man approached and started talking to the big man. This new comer looked like he had been seen some battle in his time but he seemed pleasant enough, not sensing any immediate threat from the man Diabel continued to read the the parchment Kale had handed him. Of all the jobs killing goblins seemed to be the best suited for him right away, and the Sczarni job seemed a little too close to home, and if he was honest a little petty. Diabel waited for a break in the conversation between Kale and the new comer before he spoke.
"Killing goblins huh?" Diabel looked over the parchment being handed to him by Kale. "This looks good, i think i might give it a shot in the morning"
he smiled at Kale as Diabel had released the slight reluctance in which he handed him the job.
"Dont suppose you'd like to join up?" he smiled again
"He wont want to" Diabel thought, "and that suits me fine".

Upon Zhen's words, Ameiko looked over at the brute of a man who had torn the job parchment down. She frown as she ducked a clean mug into the fresh water barrel. A somewhat annoyed 'tsk' escaped her lips. "Sorry sir, I don't." She glanced back at where the group had the parchment. "A man from the Town Hall tends to come and update the board as an when a job comes up though. I do believe there is a job board at the Town Hall too. As well as the White Deer Inn..." she grinned for a moment. "But you don't want to go there now."

With a wry grin Zhen answered "As tempting as an evening stroll in this weather is, you're right I don't want to go to the Hall or White Deer! I'm just about drying off as well, mayhap I'll wander over to the mountain and ask him to recite the list to me" With a chuckle he settled down with his water and contemplated walking over to the mountain.

Ameiko smiled as she poured herself a Varisian mead. "So you're just passing through Sandpoint? Where were you before here? Got any good stories?" Ameiko grinned at the Monk as he sipped his water.
Romi entered from the kitchen once more. By now the smells of cooked food were slowly vanishing from the air. He moved behind the bar, poured himself a mead, and sat down in his normal seat at the bar.

"Well I travel place to place, greedy for New experiencesyou might say. Knowledge, understanding and perfection always tantalizingly close but every new day, place or person shows how far out of reach it really is."
Stories, plenty of them, most mundane everyday adventurer fare. But one, maybe that one is interesting enough. "A story huh, well how about how I got to these lands, if you hadn't guessed by now I'm not from these parts."
"I arrived on these shores, literally, shipwrecked and washed up on a beach. Bodies of people, strangers to me, all around. They could be my family or friends and I wouldn't know, I don't even know my name for sure. It was scored into the back of this amulet," Zhen pulls out a battered wood carved amulet. "With a small amount of money, two weapons I wandered looking for something, anything to fill in the blanks."
Tailing off with a vague pained expression, Zhen took a sip of water. "Anyway to cut a long depressing story short I encountered some wandering priests who told me I had an amulet of Irori and the year. Turns out I've lost nearly 5 or 6 years of memory. Who was I? Was I good bad rich wealthy or poor? Was I an evil man? I don't know but I prefer to see this as a fresh Start. A chance to do something with my life. "
Taking a longer drink of water Zhen lapsed into silence, thinking to himself "I still wonder about the past though, it haunts me. Not knowing. "

Orcana grasped her wine glass a little tighter and pretended to savor the rather crude complement. "Well met." She nodded to the two sons. "I couldn't help but notice that was your advert on the notice board." Orcana gestured to the now empty notice board and struggled to hold back a curse. "Has the task been fulfilled yet?"

Telyn frowned. "No, sadly it aint, an' sadly, there aint too much to go on." he replied as he looked into his drink. "Ya see, my farm aint the only one to lose livestock... now, normally, in a year ya tend to lose one or two sheep. It happens, what with Goblin tribes and the odd wolf." "An' we don't even know if its those damn Dragons coming out of the Punchbowl. They don't tend to bother us, and they tend to give the town a wide berth you know?"

Post by cleanrabbit on Jul 28, 2013 15:24:41 GMT
Orcana nodded in understanding but mostly in relief that Telyn wasn't being overtly flirtatious. Goblins were indeed a pest and in the last fortnight alone she'd seen no fewer than seven dragons heading back towards the Punchbowl. That was one place she'd given an extremely wide birth. "How much livestock have you lost? And over what time frame? I only ask because it could be relevant to the search."

Telyn thought for a moment, but it was Tam that spoke up. "Around six sheep and two cows. Like my father mentioned, over a year or two, that would be a little high, but manageable." Tams features also wore a frown at the mention of this subject. "But over four months? It certainly isn't sustainable. We;re just farmers too, so it isn't like we can deal with the issue on our own."
Telyn nodded with a deep frown. The subject matter had wiped out the jolly mood of the three men. "Sometimes there are tracks which lead into the Brinestump Marsh. That would be the Goblins doing, or at least the tribe that lives there. But most of the missing livestock we've had, there are no tracks."
"I'm telling you father," spoke Ryin. "its those Dragons! They've finally decided to just take what they want from us!"
Telyn frowned and looked up at Orcana. "Rumour is that two Black Dragons live on the Punchbowl. But thats all I know. The best people to talk to about it are the Sheriff or Shalelu, though I'm not sure what more they could tell you."

A rumble of thunder rolled overhead loud enough to be audible inside the Rusty Dragon over the chatter of the patrons. The storm is nearing it's climax. Orcana thought. She was starting to feel more at ease in front of Telyn, either because of his mood change or the wine had taken it's effect. "I can see this has dampened your spirits Telyn, and for that I apologize. I would like to offer my services in this matter."

"Its not an issue missy." Telyn smiled. "We can't give you much though. I believe that we farmers are getting together to put some spare coins into a pot to give to Balor Hemlock though, so you might want to speak with him tomorrow to tell him you plan the take the job on." Telyn finished the last of his drink. "And Shalelu was that Elf that was in earlier. Nice enough lass... when she talks."

Sitting at the bar, Zhen was slightly taken aback by the farmer. Well that'll teach me to judge too quickly he thought!
Clearing his throat "Excuse me I couldn't help but overhear, problems with goblins or something else you reckon? Sounds like it could be challenging for a lone adventurer, even a team of two. " "Myself and the stern looking fellow over there at the bar, Godein he's called, might also be looking at ways to help. I think, me definitely, might be having a word with this Balor in the morning." Looking at the group and his gaze ending up on the half elf "my name's Zhen by the way. Always good to know potential companions beforehand I say."

As he waited at the bar for his ale, it seems that the sudden warmth was quite a shock. Once settled on the stool, a calm feeling spread over him and he was quickly snoozing away. The pipe he recently lit hung limply from his lips, and with every little snore a small amount of smoke was blown out. It was the opening of the door and the chatter of conversion that finally withdrew him from his slumber.
Groggily peeling his eyes open, Durgean looked around the room. 'Lots of elves and men here. What brings them all to this little town, I wonder.' he thinks to himself. Picking the ale before him, he wetted his parched mouth, whilst dropping a few gold coins on the bar. Turning the the closest conversation he watched and listened to what was going on.

Shalelu had restocked on some of her supplies and was now ready to exit back out into the Hinterlands. She opened on of her windows and looked out into the dark night time sky. The rain was still pretty heavy, but, she could sense that it the storm had peaked. She estimated that by the time she'd had spent a short amount of time talking to Ameiko, that the rain would not be anywhere near as heavy.
She closed the window, locked it, picked up her bow and pack, and left the room. The corridor was now empty, but as she moved, she could not help but glare at the door of the room with the Drow in.
She descended the stairs, and was happy to see Ameiko still had business. "Still going out tonight then?" Ameiko spoke. Shalelu nodded. "I am concerned about a couple of the Goblin tribes. They may use this weather as an excuse to raid the town. They have, after all, done so before."
Shalelu noted that the Drow's companion was talking to Telyn. "Ameiko," she began to speak in Varisian. "her companion is a...Night Elf." Ameiko frowned at this. "I am uncertain of his...intentions. Alas, I am more worried about any potential Goblin threat. I advise you to be...wary of him." continued the Elf.
Ameiko nodded in understanding before coming around to the other side of the bar to hug Shalelu. "Stay safe out there." replied Ameiko, falling back into Common.
Shalelu nodded, and began heading toward the door.

Amused at the Beserker's wit, Kemuel took the glass to the bar and when Amieko had seen him, he spoke up, "Please fill this up Miss Amieko. And I'd be grateful for two more full glasses."
And then as he turned to go back to the table, "Oh and please, take this gold piece. In case there is any damage to your board. You've been an excellent host and I refuse to be remembered sourly."
Back at the table Kemuel set the glasses down, one in front of the Elf who was reading the parchment and one in front of the human warrior. The last he kept for himself. Before drinking, he raised the glass into the air. "Gentlemen, Cheers, good health and hopefully - good hunting too."

Kale was shocked that the soldier gave in easily into buying him an ale. Kemuel brought three ales over, he passed the second to Diabel and the third was for himself. Kemuel raised his glass and toasted the hunt. Kale remembered Diabel mention something about joining up to do the goblin hunt, and by the sounds of things the well mannered soldier has joined the hunt also. Nodding and the half-elf then nodding at Kemuel, Kale spoke.
"To your health.....and to the hunt." It looked settled then. Kale looked at the knight.
" Kemuel, Im Kale, son of Kayal and this is Diabel.....son of.....?" Kale never got that far with the half-elf.
"Please sit."

Orcana was mulling over the complexities of the missing livestock issue, making a mental note of which people Telyn was advising to speak to when Zhen spoke up, snapping her back into her default state of nervousness the second the man at the bar spoke. She couldn't believe she was being eavesdropped but immediately chastised herself for naively believing you could have a conversation by a bar without others wanting to know what your talking about!
Throwing down the last of her wine, Orcana forced her hands to remain steady as she spoke. "Zhen, " she stuttered, taking a deep breath she continued, "A pleasure to meet you." She postured herself so that she could address both the Heyson family and the newcomer to the conversation. "It looks like Shalelu is heading out and I'd like to get her opinion on this matter before I miss her." She placed her glass on the table with Telyn's empties and met his eyes, smiling the best she could. "I'll catch up with you later." and with that she quickly moved for the door as it began to close behind Shalelu, her still damp cloak snapping behind her she reached the door quick enough to open it again without losing sight of Shalelu.

Shalelu stood out on the porch of the Inn. The rain had indeed began to let up, and she suspected that she would have a fairly dry night from now on. She figured that she would check the north side of Sandpoint first. If any tribe was going to attack it would likely be the Seven Tooth goblins that claimed Shanks Wood as their home.
She was about to put her hood up to cover her head when the door opened behind her.
